Many of us feel the tension of shifting values in our culture. Too often, schools no longer reflect what we hold to be true. Traditions are dismissed as naïve, beliefs labeled as outdated, and long-held convictions treated as disposable.
For many families, this is what leads us to homeschooling. We want to be the voice of truth in our children’s lives—to shape their hearts and minds while they are still young.

We are a school made up of homeschool families. Character Training At Katy Classical Academy, we intentionally cultivate Christ-like character in our students.

Though we understand that students are maturing and developing, demonstrating virtuous character is not optional; it is foundational to life and learning at KCA.

Students are guided to grow in the following virtues: Cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance Theological virtues: faith, hope, and love Personal virtues: wisdom, humility, and respect These virtues provide a framework for making wise choices, acting rightly, persevering through challenges, loving others, and honoring God in thought, word, and deed.

At Katy Classical Academy, parent partnership is not a feature of our model—it is the model.

We believe Scripture is clear that parents are the primary educators of their children. Education is not something families hand off and check back in on later; it is a calling that God has entrusted first to the home. Our role as a school is to come alongside parents—to support, equip, and reinforce the work they are already doing.

This is why KCA operates as a collaborative, classical Christian academy. Students spend two days on campus with professional teachers and three days learning at home under the guidance of their parents. These homeschool days are not optional or supplemental. They are essential to the formation of the student and central to our mission.

Parent partnership requires time, presence, and intentionality. It asks families to slow down, to prioritize learning and discipleship, and to take an active role in shaping not only what their children know, but who they are becoming. This commitment is demanding—but it is also deeply formative. Many families find that it brings greater unity, clarity, and purpose to their home.

Facts Alone → Truth Well-Reasoned

Especially around Christmastime, my thoughts turn to my favorite author, Charles Dickens—a man who fiercely defended childhood, imagination, and wonder. He often criticized the utilitarian spirit of education in his day, warning of what happens when learning is reduced to information alone. Through characters like Mr. Gradgrind in Hard Times, Dickens famously cautioned: “Now, what I want is, Facts… Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts.”

But do we need to memorize facts in order to learn? A classical view would say yes—particularly in the early phases of education, called the Grammar stage—because memorization provides a foundation of words and ideas, much like blocks to build with. Yet facts were never meant to stand alone. When memorization is woven into rich, experiential learning—through story, writing, speaking, singing, performing, or even play—the imagination gives those facts life and meaning.

As students grow, they begin to examine those foundational truths more closely. In the Dialectic stage (middle school), they explore nuance, ask questions, and discover deeper meaning within the facts they’ve learned.

Whether our children are dressing in historical costume, singing about the layers of the atmosphere, or reciting a poem, memorization serves a higher end: wisdom, discernment, and ultimately, the pursuit of truth.

Year One · Christmas Reflection

As our Year One students study the ancient world—from Eden to the fall of Rome—we are currently immersed in the Persian Wars, where Greece challenges the authority of the so-called “God-king,” and we are preparing to enter the Golden Age of Greece and the founding of Rome. This season offers a fitting moment to pause and reflect on what the ancient world, at its height, could not yet see.

The Overthrow of Apollo and the Pagan Gods, illustrated by William Blake between 1803 and 1815 as part of his visual response to John Milton’s On the Morning of Christ’s Nativity, presents an allegory long cherished in Christian thought: the collapse of pagan gods and philosophies in the presence of divine truth. Apollo—god of reason, light, and the arts—represents the highest achievements of classical human wisdom, yet even he must yield when confronted with the coming of Christ.

This same vision appears powerfully in Milton’s Nativity Ode, where the pagan oracles fall silent and the false gods flee at the Incarnation:

The oracles are dumb;
No voice or hideous hum
Runs through the arched roof in words deceiving.
Apollo from his shrine
Can no more divine,
With hollow shriek the steep of Delphos leaving.
No nightly trance or breathed spell
Inspires the pale-ey’d priest from the prophetic cell…

Blake’s images visually echo Milton’s poetic vision: the ancient gods cast down—not by force, but by the quiet arrival of Christ, the true Light.

For our students, this moment in history reminds us that classical education does not reject Greece and Rome; it rightly orders them. The philosophies, arts, and virtues of the ancient world prepared the way—but they find their fulfillment, not their end, in Christ. As we approach Christmas, we rejoice that into a world of mighty empires, noble thinkers, and searching hearts, the Savior was born.

This year, Jacki Rucksdashel brought one of her family’s most treasured Christmas traditions to KCA—one they have practiced for over 16 years—and it is quickly becoming a beloved tradition for our school family as well. 🎄

The Jesse Tree Project is rooted in Isaiah 11:1–10, a prophecy pointing to the coming Messiah:
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit… In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples.”

Years ago, when their children were small, the Rucksdashel family began a ministry called the Jesse Tree Project. Jacki and her husband wrote a 24-day Christmas devotional designed for families to journey together from Creation to the birth of Christ.

Jesse, the father of David, stands at the beginning of this story—a story of God’s faithfulness and redeeming love. Though we were dead in our sins, God did not leave us there. He sent a Rescuer through the line of David, keeping His promise to save and give new life.

This year, 24 KCA families are participating—creating shared ornaments, reading Scripture daily, and hanging each symbol as a reminder of the story that leads us to the long-awaited Messiah. How is your family enjoying the advent season?

We are deeply grateful for our students and the joy they take in serving others. Our time partnering with the Houston Food Bank was not merely a privilege, but a gift. As the old English proverb reminds us, many hands make light work—and with the eagerness of youth, our students labored swiftly and cheerfully, sorting potatoes and pears side by side.

There is something natural and beautiful in a child’s delight in service. When given the opportunity, they readily discover that even the smallest task can be offered for the good of others and for the glory of God.

And yet, if we are honest, the weight of daily responsibilities can press heavily upon us as adults—especially in this season. Though we know that serving others is a sacred calling, it can feel costly to give our time and to do so with glad hearts. Still, we take comfort in this truth: we serve a God who sees every offering, both great and small. He honors faithful, daily disciplines quietly at work, shaping our hearts and accomplishing far more than we could imagine.

So, KCA family, whatever kindness you are able to offer this season—however simple—give it freely, with Christ’s love and a servant’s heart. Such acts do not go unnoticed. They leave a lasting impression on our watching children and ripple outward into the world around us. 🌟

Celebrating Shelley Mills

This year, we honor the retirement of our co-founder and Head of School, Shelley Mills—a woman whose vision, courage, and steadfast joy have built the KCA we know and love today.

What began in 2013 with 22 students gathered in a living room discussing literature has grown into a thriving homeschool partnership beyond anything we imagined. Because of Shelley’s tireless work, prayerful leadership, and countless unseen sacrifices, families now enjoy the classical Christian community we once only dreamed of.

Words feel small compared to the legacy she leaves, but our gratitude is immeasurable.

From curating raw chickens to mummify and donning inflatable reindeer costumes, to guiding students through poverty simulations in Waco, cheering on hesitant learners, and holding the hands of anxious parents just beginning their homeschooling journey—Shelley has poured her whole heart into this place.

As part of our Year One studies, we explored the ancient festival of Yalda—a Persian celebration (going back as far as the days of King Daruis) marking the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Families gathered to keep vigil, share food, recite poetry, and await the victory of light over darkness with the sun’s return. In some later traditions, this night also became associated with honoring Mithra, though Yalda itself is rooted primarily in pre-Islamic Persian solstice customs focused on renewal, protection, and the hope of increasing light.

Yalda also celebrates the dawning and birth of the new year, signified by eating red fruits such as watermelon and pomegranates, which is what our students decorated the lanterns with.

For millennia, cultures around the world have treated the solstice as a turning point—a sign that even in the darkest night, light is on its way back. Our students quickly recognized the connection: for many early Christians, the winter season became a fitting moment to remember the coming of Christ, the True Light, who entered a dark world to bring hope, salvation, and life.

What a beautiful reminder this season offers: light has come, and the darkness
cannot overcome it.

Yet Christ came to overcome the curse, to transform even our hardest efforts with redemptive joy. As a classical school, we believe that hard work can be holy, shaping virtue, strengthening character, and ultimately becoming a source of joy.

Parents, we know the instinct to ease every frustration or smooth every path. But don’t give up on sowing these disciplines in your children—or in yourself. Joy grows in the very places where thorns once ruled.

Louis Markos reminds us in Passing the Torch:

“In America, we applaud ourselves for having a highly educated populace while overlooking the disturbing reality—our increasingly educated populace has become increasingly less able to distinguish evidence from hearsay, logical argument from a personal attack, reasoned discourse from political spin.”

Markos explains that classical education forms students through the Trivium:

• Grammar — laying the building blocks of knowledge

• Logic — learning to think clearly and reason wisely

• Rhetoric — expressing and defending truth with clarity and beauty

Modern education often emphasizes information (grammar) but neglects the habits of reasoning and communication that help students discern truth in an age of constant noise.

In a culture shaped by rapid media and (mis)information, how will students learn to think for themselves? They must learn what is true, love what is beautiful, and slow down long enough to reflect—if we hope to form minds that stand apart from the moment.

Dorothy Sayers saw this coming. She warned us in her essay “The Lost Tools of Learning” that society was living off the fading moral and intellectual capital of the past, and that traditions die when they are not renewed. Though she doubted her ideas would take root, history proved otherwise.

You have been faithful through this entire semester—through health battles, moving, family struggles, and the fears around us. You have given wisdom, comfort, and joy when we needed Your answers most.

O Lord, to worship You freely is a gift we can hardly comprehend, yet we thank You for every day we are able to teach and worship in safety and freedom.
As we enter this season of preparation and Advent, prepare the hearts of our families, students, and staff with patience, temperance, and strength.

“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”—Isaiah 40:3

In many modern models of education, there is significant emphasis on measurable outcomes such as standardized assessments and credentialing. While these tools have a place, research continues to show a gap between academic achievement and workplace readiness—not because students lack information, but because employers increasingly value qualities that tests cannot measure.

National employer surveys consistently highlight the need for graduates who demonstrate integrity, communication, resilience, and the ability to collaborate with others. These are not simply workplace preferences—they are reflections of character.

Classical education approaches formation with a different question: not only “What should students know?” but “Who are they becoming?” Rooted in the Christian understanding that every student is made in the image of God, classical learning seeks to shape wisdom and virtue, not merely accumulate knowledge.

Scripture reminds us that discipline produces endurance, and endurance character (Romans 5:3–4). When students learn to take responsibility, persevere through difficulty, and approach learning with humility, they are practicing habits that prepare them not just for a job, but for a life of faithful service.

As parents and educators, our calling is not only to prepare children for future employment, but to cultivate a love of what is true, good, and beautiful. These habits may be challenging in childhood, but they form the kind of maturity that no exam can measure—and the kind of character that endures in every season of life.

Our Greek Day Feast—Odyssey’s Journey—was such a joy!

Upper school students brought the story to life, serving as docents who guided families through immersive stations and portrayed the monsters Odysseus faced along the way.

We ended with a festive meal and dessert to kick off Thanksgiving break. Wishing all our families and students a wonderful, restful holiday!

Our 2025 Father–Daughter Dance was themed “Daughters of the King.” Fathers dressed formally, took their daughters to dinner, and shared intentional conversations before arriving for an evening of ice-breaker games, riddles, and learning the Jewish dance Hava Nagila (“Let Us Rejoice!”) led by our senior girls.

In ancient Jewish culture, a crown—an atarah—symbolized honor, beauty, and the cherished place of a daughter in her family. It reminded her that she was treasured by both her earthly father and her Heavenly Father. Continuing in that tradition, each father crowned his daughter, spoke a blessing over her, and affirmed her identity and worth as a beloved daughter of the King.

We incorporate these traditions because they connect beautifully with our classical Christian curriculum. This year’s study of Ancient History has led us through Old Testament feasts, celebrations, and figures like Queen Esther. Scripture is full of rejoicing, and we love weaving those traditions into special events like our Father–Daughter Dance.

What an honor and special treat it was to welcome former staff member Stephanie King and her husband, Chris, as they shared the rich traditions of the biblical feasts with our students!

Our history class transformed into an immersive, multisensory experience—students tasted traditional foods, smelled the fragrant spices and citrus of the lulav, heard the blast of the shofar, and stepped inside a beautifully decorated tent for the final feast.

Students rotated through seven feast stations:

• Shabbat — a Day of Remembrance and rest
• Pesach (Passover) — remembering God’s deliverance from Egypt and pointing us to Christ
• Shavuot (Feast of Firstfruits / Pentecost)
• Yom Teruah (Rosh Hashanah) — the blowing of the shofar
• Yom Kippur — the most holy day, a biblically mandated fast when the High Priest made atonement for the nation of Israel
• Sukkot (Feast of Booths)

These feasts paint a vivid picture of God’s faithfulness throughout redemptive history. In this season of thanksgiving, we rejoice that Jesus is our perfect atonement—so that we may be reconciled to God.

For Israel, the feasts were God’s gracious way of helping His people remember His provision. For us, they serve as a powerful reminder of our need for atonement. And we are overwhelmed with gratitude that our Heavenly Father has provided that atonement through Christ.

Our lower school students just completed their Aegean vase projects in Mrs. Luong’s art class! Each design was inspired by what they’ve been learning about Greek civilizations and by photographs of archaeological discoveries. We’re so impressed by their attention to symmetry and geometric designs and creativity!

Fall-ing in love with learning! 🥧 Our kindergarten class made apple pies from scratch and had a blast tasting apples, kneading dough, and enjoying their creations. The crisp weather was just the icing on the cake.

Today in assembly, our students heard from Mr. Wilson about the moral virtue of Temperance — strength under control.

We looked at Daniel, who refused the king’s rich foods and wine, choosing instead to honor God even when no one would have blamed him for blending in. Daniel trusted God to bless his obedience despite the pressures of the culture around him.

Temperance means doing the right thing even when no one would know you did the wrong thing.

Pastor Kent Wilson brought this lesson to life with a memorable (and deliciously difficult) challenge: holding warm, gooey doughnuts close enough to smell—but not taking a bite! 🍩

With laughter, willpower, and a sweet lesson learned, students were reminded of Psalm 141:3–4:

“Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil…”

Even a doughnut can teach us the strength of self-control!

This quarter at KCA, we are practicing the virtue of Temperance. Self-control isn’t about restriction. It is the strength to guide our desires toward what is good and life-giving. Through the Holy Spirit, we learn to pause, to choose wisely, and to steward our hearts well.

This month we are excited to put this virtue into action through our Mission Outreach partnership with Current Church. Our students will join Current Cupboard’s annual “Turkey Trek” to collect and package food and bless families in our community this Thanksgiving season.

After mastering the Trivium (The stages of Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric), classical students move into the Quadrivium—the “four ways” of higher learning:

🔢 Arithmetic (Numbers): Understanding pure number and order.

🎶 Music (Numbers in Time): Discovering harmony, rhythm, and beauty through number.

📐 Geometry (Numbers in Space): Exploring shape, proportion, and the design of creation.

🌌 Astronomy (Numbers in Motion): Observing the heavens and God’s orderly universe.

For centuries, these disciplines trained students to see the world as both orderly and beautiful, reflecting God’s wisdom. You move from the smallest idea of a number to the sweeping motion of galaxies. It’s a stunning ascent into wonder.

Modern education still draws deeply from this tradition. Coding, physics, architecture, engineering, and music theory continue the Quadrivium’s legacy, helping students encounter truth through the patterns woven into creation.

So how do we teach the Quadrivium today? 🤔Once students learn how to think well through the Trivium, they begin to explore what God has made with renewed awe. Life post high school becomes an exploration for wonder, discovery, and worship.

Shift In Perspective

Katy Classical Academy serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade through a two-day-a-week campus model

(Tuesdays and Thursdays), with guided assignments completed at home on alternate days.

This structure encourages strong academics, family involvement, accountability, and preparation for the college schedule.

KCA offers a Christ-centered classical education grounded in a biblical worldview. Our campus culture is creative, high-energy, and joy-filled.

Classes currently meet at Current Church, with plans to relocate to Katy’s First Baptist Church on Pin Oak Road in Fall 2026.
